Mysterious respiratory illness spreads to North Carolina dogs

[WECT] North Carolina faces growing concern over a mysterious respiratory illness affecting dogs, with Truss Vet Veterinary Urgent Care reporting a surge in cases, treating eight dogs in the past 24 hours alone. The ailment, with symptoms resembling influenza, lacks specific diagnostic tests, complicating identification. Veterinarians, including Dr. Brad Waffa of Truss Vet, are closely monitoring for signs of pneumonia, a potential complication. Dr. Waffa urges pet owners to remain vigilant for symptoms like coughing, loss of appetite, decreased energy, and fever. Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospital advises heightened awareness of unusual behaviors in dogs and recommends minimizing public outings due to the unknown nature of the illness, which may pose a risk of transmission in public settings.
