IN THIS ISSUE: Costco sells $100 million in gold bars | New Hanover County sees high suicide rate

TUESDAY TOGETHER WITH

Good Morning Wilmington!

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Be aware that there are a lot of new owners of both motorized and non-motorized skateboards, bikes and scooters as well as new drone pilots. Keep that in mind and be on the lookout for them when driving about. It may take a while before they get used to their new toys. Speaking of new toys–the next couple of days will be pretty wet. Make sure you bring your toys inside so they don’t get ruined.

Keep an eye out for tomorrow’s New Year’s Eve issue. This issue will be filled with NYE events happening in and around Wilmington. Be sure to share tomorrow’s issue as it will help me grow my subscriber base. Also, don’t hesitate to email me and let me know if I missed a New Year's event and I’ll add it to the list!

Costco sells $100 million in gold bars

[CBS NEWS] Seems like a significant sign of the dollar’s financial health that Costco sold $100 million in one-ounce gold bars last quarter. Costco CFO Richard Galanti said Thursday in an earnings call. Amid persistent inflation, consumers snapped up the gold which sold out within hours.

The bars, which are currently out of stock, cost between $1,950 and $1,980 this fall. The spot price for gold was more than $2,000 an ounce as of Monday.

Suicide rates in New Hanover County nearly double the national average

[WECT] New Hanover County reported a concerning increase in suicides in 2022, with 55 deaths, 75% of which were male. The rate, approximately 23.4 per 100,000, exceeded the national average of about 14.3 per 100,000. Mental health advocate Debbie Owens, who lost her son Jeremy to suicide in 2020, emphasizes the need to address mental health in men and break the stigma. The county plans to allocate nearly $1 million in opioid settlement funds and part of the budget to fund various mental health programs, aiming to eliminate stigma and support the community.
