6.9 million 23andMe customers hacked

[BBC] Hackers accessed personal information from 6.9 million users of genetic testing company 23andMe using old passwords, with data including family trees, birth years, and locations. The breach affected over half of the company's customers, but did not compromise DNA records. While 23andMe itself was not hacked, cybercriminals logged into 14,000 accounts (0.1% of customers) using previously exposed email and password details. By accessing these accounts, hackers gained entry to a significant number of files containing profile information about other users' ancestry, downloading data such as names, birth years, locations, pictures, addresses, and shared DNA percentages with relatives. The breach underscores the importance of improving cybersecurity behaviors, with 23andMe now notifying affected customers and enforcing password changes for improved account security.

Chemours Expands PFAS Testing to Thousands More Homes in Cape Fear Region

[WHQR] Chemours, the company responsible for PFAS contamination in the Cape Fear River, is expanding PFAS testing in private drinking water wells across New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus, and Pender counties. Directed by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, the sampling includes over 14,100 additional residences, now extending to floodplains. This expansion follows a comprehensive review by DEQ, incorporating Chemours' updated sampling and drinking water plan. Residents within a quarter mile of public water lines can also request testing. Those with high PFAS levels may receive replacement drinking water and qualify for free water filter installation. To request sampling, residents can contact Chemours online or by phone, ensuring their well is the primary water source for eligibility.

[YAHOO] Bank of America, headquartered in Charlotte, is set to close over 100 branches across the U.S. by the end of 2023, with an additional 15 closures expected in 2024. This move is part of a broader industry trend initiated around 2010, gaining momentum due to challenges and labor shortages exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
