PCP: WED FEB 7: UNC Alum Zena Cardman to Join Mission to Space

IN THIS ISSUE: NC Campuses score well for free speech

WEDNESDAYS WITH YOU

Good Morning Wilmington!

I watched part of the NHCS Board of Education meeting online yesterday. Things got a little heated when former board member Nelson Beaulieu stood up to talk to address the board during the call to audience. Nelson spent his four minutes criticizing the conservatively weighted board. This address was likely intended to occur on the same meeting night that Pat Bradford was expected intention to make a motion to rescind Superintendent Dr. Foust’s contract renewal; however Bradford did not make that expected motion last night.

The members of this board have an interesting but contentious dynamic. I commend Board Chair, Pete Wildeboer for keeping the peace between these opposing dynamics and ideologies. One strong point of contention is the policy outlines standards for professional conduct–specifically Section Z which states what employees and educators are NOT to teach. WWAY covers this thoroughly and is worth a read.

North Carolina College Campuses Score Well for Free Speech, Except for Some Vague Policies

[NC Newsline] The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) reports North Carolina's college campuses largely support free speech, but some policies raise concerns. While most UNC System campuses earn high ratings, some private institutions face scrutiny. Vague policies at Winston-Salem State and A&T prompt review.
