NC Supreme Court: Ace Speedway Can Sue Over Pandemic Closure

[WUNC] The North Carolina Supreme Court ruled that Ace Speedway in Alamance County can proceed with a lawsuit against the state, claiming that the government's pandemic-related restrictions violated their constitutional rights. The speedway had defied gathering limits during the pandemic and was subsequently ordered to shut down. The court's decision allows the speedway to seek financial damages, asserting that the state's actions may have been selectively enforced due to the operator's outspoken opposition to the restrictions.

New Hanover Schools Consider AI for Future-Ready Students

[WWAY] The New Hanover County Board of Education discussed the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in schools. Mary Alice Hudson and Josh Bailey from the GenAI Implementation team highlighted that 66% of leaders now require AI skills for hiring. They emphasized that while teachers don't need to be AI experts, they should understand its basics. Concerns about AI-induced plagiarism were addressed, with a focus on educating students and staff about its ethical use. Board member Stephanie Kraybill supported integrating AI, noting its potential for enhancing learning and adapting teaching to current events.

Carolina Beach Police Secures $10K Grant for Drones and Wellness

[WECT] The Carolina Beach Police Department (CBPD) has secured over $10,000 in grants to enhance its drone unit and host a health and wellness seminar for officers. The drone unit, crucial for beach rescues and high-risk situations, will receive upgrades, while the wellness seminar will provide strategies to help officers manage the physical and mental demands of law enforcement. The grants, made possible by local donations, are part of ongoing efforts by the Carolina Beach Police Foundation to support the department beyond its regular budget.
