PCP - TUE MAR 26: Student brought a loaded gun to Laney

IN THIS ISSUE: Two new restaurants coming to Burgaw

TUESDAY TOGETHER WITH

Good Morning Wilmington–

By now you may have heard last night a container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore before the bridge collapsed into the Patapsco RIver.

This tragic event resulted in the loss of life when at least dozens of cars along with a tractor trailer hit the cold water along with 20 or so construction workers working on the bridge. The ship’s crew members are all accounted for with no injuries.

This bridge is significant not only for the amount of commerce that travels both over and under the bridge but as the name suggests, the bridge has a story as well. This bridge is named after Francis Scott Key who witnessed from that approximate area the attack on Fort McHenry during the war of 1812. Francis Scott Key wrote the poem “Defense of Fort M’Henry” after a night of bombardment by the British a large American flag was still standing–symbolizing an American victory over the British in the Battle of Baltimore. That poem was later designated as “Star-Spangled Banner,” the United States national anthem.

Apparently the ship lights flickered and veered off course minutes before hitting the bridge.

What are the chances that a ship’s navigation and/or electronics fails just minutes before striking a major traffic artery and symbol of American victory and freedom? I don’t know–one thing for sure, this is a heavy loss by the unknown number of lives of the drivers and construction workers and it’s a heavy loss for the struggling city of Baltimore.
