Mt. Olive Pickles

Read this great article about Mt. Olive in Our State
Summary: Mount Olive, a community in North Carolina, earned the title of "North Carolina's unofficial pickle capital" by pickling an unexpectedly abundant cucumber harvest in the early 20th century. Originally a stop on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad, Mount Olive's excess cucumbers were preserved in brine tanks, attracting attention and investment. In 1926, an incorporated pickle company was established, consolidating various brands under the name Mt. Olive in 1953. Today, the Mt. Olive Pickle Company, headquartered on Cucumber Boulevard, remains a multimillion-dollar enterprise, proudly representing the region's pickle tradition. The town hosts the North Carolina Pickle Festival annually, celebrating its pickle heritage and community dedication. Additionally, the New Year's Eve Pickle Drop, initiated in 1999, has become a beloved tradition, with a giant glowing pickle descending into a jar as part of the festivities.
