Ironman is expected to affect traffic

TUESDAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU

Good Morning Wilmington!

When you’re thinking about what to do this weekend, keep in mind that:

  • This is the last weekend for this year’s NC State Fair in Raleigh

  • Autumn in Topsail festival is all weekend

  • Sunday will likely be the best day weather-wise

  • Ironman will be in town…and I’m not talking about the Robert Downey Jr. I’m talking about the Ironman (swim/bike/run) triathlon. This is sure to draw a lot of people here and tie up traffic–specifically on Saturday. Areas most affected include Front Street & Greenfield Lake, downtown, MLK Blvd.-to-Eastwood and Wrightsville Beach. Click here for more traffic details.

    • Saturday AM Avoid:

      • Eastwood-to-Wrightsville Beach & Military Cutt-off

      • College-to-MLK

      • Highway 76-to-421 & 421-to-I-140

    • All day Saturday Avoid:

      • Front Street & Greenville Lake area

In National & World News:

  • Rep. Rashida Tliaib [MI] joins thousands of pro-Palestinian/Hamas protesters gather inside and outside of US Capitol building demanding ceasefire

  • Jim Jordon [OH] was nominated again, this time by Rep Tom Cole but lost…this time 22 republicans voted against him

  • 30-year fixed mortgage just hit 8% for the first time since 2000

WECT, WHQR and Port City Daily to host forum for Wilmington City Council candidates

WECT teamed up with WHQR and Port City Daily to hold two political candidate forums for the upcoming 2023 November Municipal elections.

The forum for Wilmington City Council candidates is set for Monday, Oct. 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Cape Fear Community College’s Union Station Auditorium. Same as the first forum, it will be hosted by WECT’s Jon Evans, and feature reporters from all three news organizations asking questions to the candidates.

More Townhomes Could Be Coming to Porters Neck

Residents on Market Street are expressing concerns about potential changes in their already congested neighborhood as developers are in the beginning stages of proposing a conditional rezoning for 348 two and three-story multi-family townhomes at 8138 Market St. The proposed development, covering 33.54 acres, has raised worries among locals, who cited issues like traffic congestion, overcrowded schools, and healthcare facilities during a public meeting. The developers are considering traffic improvements and restricted access to neighboring areas to address some of these concerns, but not all residents are convinced, with lingering uncertainties about the project's specifics. Approval from the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners is required for the rezoning to proceed.

SCarowinds is in Full Swing Until OCT 29

As October begins, the Halloween season at Carowinds is in full swing, featuring their annual SCarowinds Halloween Haunt with familiar yet unique elements. This year introduces the "Tricks and Treats" daytime parade, which adds a fun, adorable touch to the festivities. To enhance the experience, arriving at the park around 3-3:30 pm on weekends can help avoid crowds, especially for season passholders. The "First in Fright" experience allows daytime visitors to stay inside the park as it transforms for SCarowinds, offering exclusive access to a themed area with attractions and dining. Visiting on a Sunday is recommended to avoid long waits, and the live entertainment options, as well as the Fast & Fright Lane upgrade, offer additional treats. SCarowinds' mazes and scare zones continue to deliver exceptional scares, with memorable moments highlighted, including a surprising chainsaw scare and a well-executed strobe light scare in Depths of Darkness.
