Sheriffs Clash with Lawmakers Over Immigration Cooperation in North Carolina
[News&Observer] North Carolina Republicans are close to passing legislation requiring local law enforcement cooperation with immigration authorities, sparking a political battle. House Bill 10 mandates sheriffs notify ICE of individuals' legal status for certain offenses and honor detainer requests. Sheriffs like Garry McFadden oppose, arguing it undermines community trust and constitutional rights. Proponents argue it enhances public safety and ensures accountability. With a GOP supermajority, the bill's passage seems likely despite previous vetoes. The debate intensifies over balancing immigration enforcement with local autonomy and constitutional concerns.
