THURSDAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU

Good Morning Wilmington!

Temps will be a little higher today but the next three days be frigid–then–finally warming up on Monday and staying warm throughout next week. Today might be a good day to cover up and protect any exposed pipes before this next cold snap.

Loaded Concerns: TSA Unveils Alarming Rise in Firearms at Airport Checkpoints

[WWAY] The TSA uncovered a record-breaking 6,737 guns at airport security in 2023, surpassing the previous year's record. Approximately 93% of the discovered firearms were loaded, raising concerns about passenger safety. Three airports, including Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson, accounted for over 1,100 guns. TSA Administrator David Pekoske emphasized the strict prohibition of guns in carry-ons, reminding travelers to follow proper procedures for transporting firearms in checked baggage. Violators face fines up to $14,950 and potential loss of TSA PreCheck eligibility.

Shipwreck Spectacle: 1919 Schooner's Remains Surface in Surf City Sands

[WECT] The remains of the 1919 shipwreck "William H. Sumner" were discovered on a Surf City beach. The three-masted schooner, carrying phosphate, mahogany, and ironwood from San Juan to New York, ran aground in 1919. The town urges people not to disturb the remains due to legal protections for shipwrecks.

Parents' Bill of Rights Implementation: State Board to Adopt Rules for Hearings

[NC NEWSLINE] The State Board of Education is set to adopt temporary rules addressing parental concerns about school district policies under the new "Parents’ Bill of Rights" law. The law requires schools to notify parents of name/pronoun changes by their child, restricting gender identity/sexuality instruction in K-4. The rules outline procedures for hearings before the state board and require written requests detailing concerns. If granted, school districts cover the costs. The rules must be in place by Jan. 30, with potential consideration for permanent rules later in the year.
