PCP THUR JUN 27: REAL sustainable food
IN THIS ISSUE: New Center at NC State to Develop Eco-Friendly Protein Alternatives | Local Farmers Overcome Challenges to Keep Cape Fear Region Fed

THURSDAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU
Good morning Wilmington!
You hear a lot about over population consuming limited resources. Throughout the years the solutions offered have been to control population, produce genetically modified food, add insects to diet and produce lab-grown meat.
Before you try that chocolate-covered cricket or lab-grown meat, please consider watching this Ted Talk by Allan Savory. Savory tells about the greatest regret of his life and how he is spending the rest of his days trying to correct his mistake.
In local news, the NHC Board of Education is scheduling an emergency meeting today @ 11AM to gather more information so that they come to a final vote on the budget. The budget is currently undecided with more than 150 jobs in question. Unless this is a closed meeting, you can catch it live on YouTube on the New Hanover County Schools channel.

New Center at NC State to Develop Eco-Friendly Protein Alternatives
[WRAL] NC State University has won a $30 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund to establish the Center of Sustainable Protein. This facility will focus on developing environmentally friendly and healthy protein alternatives, including plant-based, precision fermentation, and cultivated meat. The initiative aims to address the growing global demand for sustainable food sources as the population nears 10 billion. The center will collaborate with UNC Pembroke, Forsyth Tech Community College, and Duke University.

UNCW Chef Ryan Andress to Compete for National ACE Champion Title
[WWAY] UNC Wilmington's Executive Chef Ryan Andress won the 2024 ACE Champion title in a regional competition and will now compete for the national title in Texas today. His winning dish, Chicken-Fried UNCW Black Sea Bass, impressed judges on criteria like cleanliness, execution, and flavor.

Local Farmers Overcome Challenges to Keep Cape Fear Region Fed
[WHQR] Small-scale farmers in the Cape Fear region, like Michael Torbett of Terra Vita Farm and Morgan Milne of Red Beard Farms, face numerous challenges, from pest control to unpredictable weather. They use organic practices and sell produce through CSAs, farmers markets, and local restaurants. Despite setbacks like hurricanes, they remain resilient, emphasizing the importance of local produce for health and community support.

Get Your Soil Tested for Free at New Hanover Arboretum!
[WWAY] New Hanover County Arboretum offers free soil testing from April to Thanksgiving. Residents can bring soil samples for pH and nutrient testing.
