Affordable housing project receives more than $2 million from loan program

[WECT] The Covenant, an affordable housing development for seniors with fixed incomes, is set to resume construction with gap funding from the $190 million Workforce Housing Loan Program. Owned by Pastor Robert Campbell of New Beginning Christian Church, the project, in partnership with East Carolina Community Development, faced challenges during the pandemic with increased construction costs, disrupted supply chains, and rising rents. With the additional funding, the development aims to address the need for affordable workforce housing, especially for seniors. Senator Michael Lee, instrumental in securing the gap funding, emphasizes the ongoing priority of addressing housing issues in the fast-growing area. Despite progress, leaders acknowledge that more work is needed to meet the broader demand for affordable housing in Wilmington.
