Wilmington City Council Approves Ogden Rezoning for 253 Homes, Including Affordable Units

[WUNC] Wilmington City Council has rezoned a newly annexed 19-acre property in Ogden, paving the way for 253 apartments and townhomes near Alexander Rd. and Market Street. Developer HH Hunt plans a $40 million project, including 25 affordable housing units with rents starting at $930. Despite concerns about traffic and school overcrowding, the Council approved the rezoning 5-1. Construction will follow city stormwater and road standards, contributing to Wilmington’s taxable property base.

EPA Pressures NC to Reinstate Toxic Discharge Limits

[Port City Daily] Asheboro’s recent surge in toxic 1,4-dioxane discharges, following a court ruling overturning restrictions, has sparked federal intervention. The EPA has threatened to take over enforcement unless North Carolina reinstates discharge limits. While Asheboro and other municipalities argue the restrictions are financially burdensome, critics point to environmental risks and contamination of downstream water supplies affecting Wilmington and surrounding regions. The EPA insists the Clean Water Act supports regulating chemicals like 1,4-dioxane, even if not formally classified as carcinogens. DEQ is appealing the ruling.
