Expansion of license plate readers in NC

IN THIS ISSUE: increasing plate readers, EV spaces and home prices in NC

MONDAYS TOGETHER WITH

Good Morning Wilmington!

It’s that awkward time of year when you see a 12-foot skeleton in one yard and a nativity scene in the next yard. My favorite is the neighbors with Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas theme complete with Christmas lights. “We’re just going to ease into the next season.”

Gov. Roy Cooper signs law allowing for expansion of license plate readers

(WECT) According to the law, data obtained by the readers “shall be obtained, accessed, preserved, or disclosed only for law enforcement purposes,” however data “shall not be used for the enforcement of traffic violations.”

Defined by the law, law enforcement purposes for which data obtained can be used include:

  • “Actions related to criminal investigations, arrests, prosecutions, post-conviction confinement, or supervision.

  • Apprehending an individual with an outstanding felony warrant.

  • Locating a missing or endangered person.

  • Locating a lost or stolen vehicle.”

New Hanover looking to mandate allocation of parking spaces for EVs

[WECT] The number of electric vehicle (EV) owners in New Hanover County has surged by 816% in the last five years, prompting the county's planning board to propose an ordinance to accommodate the growing trend. The ordinance aims to mandate that new parking lots, decks, or expansions to existing facilities allocate 20%-30% of spaces for EVs, with a cap of 15 spaces per lot. These designated spots, termed EV-ready, would be equipped with the necessary underground wiring for future charger installations. While some argue that it's premature given the current low prevalence of electric vehicles, the county contends that preparing for an electric future is crucial. The proposal is set for public discussion at the Jan. 8 Board of Commissioners’ meeting, allowing stakeholders to voice their opinions on the matter.

[WRAL] The real estate frenzy spurred by the coronavirus pandemic continues, though at a slower pace. Buyers are still competing for a limited supply of housing, driving up prices for affordable properties.

The typical home value in the United States was $350,091 in September, 2.1% higher than the year before.Increasing mortgage rates have slowed growth, with prices even declining in some places. But some areas are still seeing price jumps compared to the year before.
