PCP - WED SEPT 25: Helene & Port Strike

IN THIS ISSUE: Port Shutdown Threatens Supply Chain as Union Seeks Higher Wages

WEDNESDAY TOGETHER WITH YOU

Good morning Wilmington!

Get ready to check in on our Florida friends as Helene prepares to make landfall on Thursday. The Cape Fear Region will likely get some heavy rain and gusty winds with possible tornadoes Thursday night into Friday.

That’s not the only disturbance we need to watch. Keep an eye on this Longshoremen’s strike which will likely start on OCT 1 and shut down the Wilmington Port. This strike also has the potential to disrupt supply chains while making life difficult for truckers.

In today’s Port City Pulse:

Port Shutdown Threatens Supply Chain as Union Seeks Higher Wages

[WECT] East Coast ports, including Wilmington, may face a potential shutdown as the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) threatens to strike on Oct. 1 over wage disputes. If no new contract is reached with the U.S. Maritime Alliance, cargo operations could come to a halt, affecting holiday shopping and supply chains. Ports are extending hours to minimize congestion before the deadline. A strike could result in weeks of recovery for disrupted operations.

UNC System Shuts Down DEI Offices, Saves $17M

[WUNC] In compliance with the UNC Board of Governors' "institutional neutrality" policy, several UNC System universities have closed or restructured DEI offices and eliminated programs for marginalized groups. These changes affect DEI staffing, identity-based centers, and student services across the system, with the aim of reducing ideological bias. The universities have collectively saved $17 million from these changes, reallocating resources to broader student success initiatives. Critics fear this could undermine support for marginalized students.
