UNC Asheville Hosts Three-Day Symposium One Year After Helene
Spectrum News – UNC Asheville is hosting a three-day symposium, Sept. 24-26, to mark one year since Hurricane Helene devastated parts of western North Carolina. The events, themed “Remembering, Rebuilding, and Reimagining,” feature over 70 activities, including music performances, panel discussions, art exhibitions, and storytelling. Highlights include a gallery renaming in honor of alumnus Sami Zoobi, who died during the storm, and musical showcases reflecting on community resilience. The symposium aims to provide spaces for reflection, celebrate artistic contributions, and explore strategies for long-term community recovery.

Percy and Capri Make Their First Splash at Fort Fisher Aquarium This Week
[NC Aquarium] The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher is inviting the community to meet two loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings, Percy and Capri, on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 9:30 a.m. in its Loggerhead Sea Turtle Conservation habitat. Kure Beach Mayor Allen Oliver will release one of the hatchlings during the event, which also marks the transition from yearlings Maris and Atlas, now cleared for release into the ocean. Percy and Capri, rescued after not making their initial trek to sea, will spend a year under the Aquarium’s care as ambassadors for conservation. The debut is included with an Aquarium visit, and online reservations are required.
