Wilmington Council to Vote on $3.8M Trail Project, Kenan Fountain Repairs

[WECT] Wilmington City Council’s July 15 meeting will cover a range of initiatives—from sustainability efforts to infrastructure upgrades. Officials will consider a $3.86 million contract for the Greenville Loop Trail’s second section, and approve over $176,000 in additional funding to repair the Kenan Fountain, damaged by an NCDOT contractor. The council will also discuss fossil fuel-free investment amendments, HVAC upgrades at the Riverwalk Visitors Center, and recognize both city staff and Wilmington 101 graduates. New City Manager Rebecca Hawke and Interim Police Chief Ralph Evangelous will be sworn in during the session.

Governor Stein Signs Bill Making NC Schools Phone-Free Zones

[X@NC_Governor] Governor Josh Stein announced that all North Carolina public schools will now be cell phone-free zones, thanks to a newly passed bipartisan bill. The legislation, set to take effect in the upcoming school year, aims to eliminate classroom distractions, support teachers, and give students a much-needed break from social media. Supporters argue this move will foster deeper focus and engagement in learning environments across the state.
