Temporary Aquarium Location Planned at Independence Mall During Fort Fisher Renovation
WRAL — The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher will open a temporary location inside Independence Mall while its main facility undergoes a major renovation and expansion. The new 8,000-square-foot space, called Discovery Cove, will feature animal encounters, marine habitats, educational programming, and a gift shop, allowing the aquarium to stay connected with the community during construction. Work began on Jan. 12, with the mall location expected to open several months later as the Fort Fisher site prepares to close for upgrades.

North Carolina Mountaintop Bought to Preserve Rock Climbing and Hiking
News & Observer The Blue Ridge Conservancy has purchased 74 acres at Howard Knob, a popular rock climbing site overlooking Boone, after a 30-year effort to protect it from development. The area, known for its unique gneiss boulder field, will open to climbers and hikers in 2026, with plans for trails and amenities, including a future connection to the Northern Peaks State Trail. This marks the culmination of decades of local conservation and advocacy.
