Both weekend mass shooting suspects previously served as sergeants at Camp Lejeune during overlapping time.
WECT Both men accused in separate mass shootings over the weekend had spent overlapping time in Camp Lejeune, raising troubling questions about the struggles some veterans face after service. Nigel Edge, accused of killing three and wounding several others at a Southport bar, and Thomas Sanford, the suspect in a deadly church shooting and fire in Michigan, were both Marine sergeants who served in Iraq and were stationed at the North Carolina base during overlapping years. Sanford died in a police shootout, while Edge is scheduled to appear in Brunswick County court.

Governor Stein urges stronger mental health response after Southport tragedy
WECT Governor Josh Stein joined local and state law enforcement officials in Southport to address the community after Saturday’s mass shooting at the American Fish Company. Stein stressed that mental health challenges, particularly among veterans like suspect Nigel Edge who suffers from PTSD, are too often tied to tragic violence. He called for stronger integration between law enforcement and mental health care, acknowledging systemic gaps that leave communities vulnerable. Stein said his administration is conducting a statewide analysis to ensure resources are available to prevent similar incidents.
