Federal Government Restores $6.8B in Frozen Education Funds, $165M for North Carolina

[Carolina Journal] The U.S. Department of Education announced it will release $6.8 billion in federal education funding that had been frozen since June 30, including over $165 million for North Carolina. The freeze threatened nearly 10% of the state’s federal education funding and prompted a lawsuit by NC Attorney General Jeff Jackson and 24 other states. The announcement ends weeks of uncertainty for school districts, some of which had already implemented hiring freezes. Nine of the 10 hardest-hit school districts are in rural areas, including communities recovering from Hurricane Helene. New federal guardrails will be applied to the funds going forward.
