Hurricane Erin Swells Trigger 85+ Rip Current Rescues at Wrightsville & Surf City

[WECT] Though Hurricane Erin isn’t forecasted to make landfall, its massive swells are already causing dangerous conditions along Southeastern North Carolina beaches. On Monday alone, Wrightsville Beach lifeguards performed more than 70 rescues, with another 15 in Surf City. Officials warn that Wednesday and Thursday could see the worst of the impacts, with high rip current risks, red flags, and no-swimming advisories in place through Friday. Beyond the water, towns like Carolina Beach are preparing for flooding, relocating lifeguard stands and blocking flood-prone streets. Authorities stress: the waves may look inviting, but they’re deadly.

Rip Current Danger: Temporary No Swimming Advisory at Wrightsville Beach

[WWAY] Wrightsville Beach officials have issued a temporary no-swimming advisory from Tuesday through Friday due to dangerous rip currents fueled by large swells. The National Weather Service reported at least 50 rescues on Monday alone, prompting the precaution. Ocean Rescue Director Sam Proffitt stressed safety as the top priority, urging beachgoers to respect the advisory. Conditions are expected to improve by the weekend, but swimmers are encouraged to remain cautious until the restriction is lifted.
