THURSDAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU

Good morning Wilmington!

That disturbance that we saw a few days ago is currently in the Caribbean and at least for now appears will have less affect on us as it heads west towards the Florida’s Gulf. Still we have varying chances of showers and thunderstorms every day this weekend and into next week–of course that can all change.

Here’s today’s issue–

New Hanover Schools Consider Locking Up Student Cell Phones

[WHQR] The New Hanover County School Board is considering implementing Yondr pouches to lock students' cell phones during the school day to limit distractions and social media use. The board postponed the presentation from Yondr to the next meeting. Assistant District Attorney Ashton Herring highlighted concerns about the sharing of sexually explicit images among students, noting that possessing such material is a felony. A Pew Research poll found that over 70% of high school teachers view cell phone use as a major classroom issue.

NC House Overrides Vetoes on Housing, Digital Currency, and Vehicle Bills

[WUNC] The North Carolina House voted to override three of Governor Roy Cooper's vetoes on Wednesday. The bills, which address housing discrimination, digital currency payments, and off-road vehicle regulations, now await Senate action, likely delayed until September. The housing bill prevents local governments from banning landlords from rejecting tenants with federal vouchers. The digital currency bill prohibits state agencies from accepting cryptocurrency payments, and the vehicle bill allows modified utility vehicles to drive at higher speeds on highways.

North Carolina’s $4 Billion Medical Debt Relief Plan Gains Federal Approval

[NC Newsline] The federal government has approved North Carolina’s plan to erase $4 billion in medical debt for two million residents. The Cooper administration’s initiative requires hospitals to agree to increased federal payments in exchange for debt forgiveness. This plan aims to relieve medical debt for low-income patients and prevent new debt accumulation. Hospitals must meet specific conditions to qualify for increased payments, and the administration is working to secure their participation.
