THURSDAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU

Good morning Wilmington!

2025 begins with two tragic events:
Driver rams New Orleans crowd during New Years Eve celebration and fired upon crowd killing at least 15 and injuring 35. Driver was killed in a firefight and identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar. Officials do not believe driver was solely responsible and are looking for additional suspects.

Tesla Cybertruck explodes in front of the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day. The truck had been loaded full of fireworks mortars and camping fuel to enhance the blast. The truck was rented and driven by Matthew Livensberger who died from the explosion.

Both suspects were US Army veterans and both rented their vehicles from Turo.

Josh Stein Sworn In as North Carolina’s Governor

[WWAY] Josh Stein was sworn in as North Carolina’s governor, succeeding Roy Cooper. Stein, a Democrat and former attorney general, emphasized bipartisanship and rebuilding after Hurricane Helene. He is the state’s first Jewish governor and took the oath on a historic Hebrew Bible. The ceremony highlighted Democratic continuity despite GOP legislative challenges. A larger inauguration is set for Jan. 11.

Governor Cooper Commutes 15 Death Sentences to Life in Prison

[WECT] Governor Roy Cooper commuted the death sentences of 15 inmates, including Vincent Wooten of Pitt County, to life without parole. Cooper cited extensive review, input from victims' families, and considerations like age, mental capacity, and racial bias. The move affects inmates convicted between 1993 and 2011 and reflects evolving standards for capital punishment.
