PCP Mon Mar 23: Spring showers & Stringdusters

Watch the weather tonight Infamous Stingdusters kick off Greenfield Lake's spring lineup!

Good morning Wilmington! Spring is officially here — but she's got a moody side today, so keep an umbrella close. Those afternoon storms aren't kidding. In today's issue: a local election office in turmoil (with a board meeting happening tonight), a big state win for Cape Fear clean water, a Grammy-winning bluegrass band coming to Greenfield Lake on Wednesday, and a missing Air Force general with a very strange story. A lot to unpack. Let's get into it.

NHC Elections Board Suspends Newly Hired Director — Special Meeting Tonight

WECT/WHQRDeNay Harris was appointed elections director in January and officially started in early February. On March 19, the board placed her on administrative suspension with pay. Harris says it's retaliation for documenting what she described as "serious compliance issues" — including alleged unauthorized access to election areas — and for raising concerns about County Manager Chris Coudriet. The board chair offered no official reason. Aspecial closed-session meeting is tonight at 5 p.m.at 230 Government Center Drive.

Governor Commits $17M to Connect Cape Fear Families to Clean Water

WECTGovernor Josh Stein visited the Sweeney Water Treatment Plant in Wilmington earlier this month to announce $17 million in grants to connect more than 300 Cape Fear–area homes — still relying on contaminated private wells — to CFPUA's clean water supply. Additional state funds are headed to the Southside Water Reclamation Facility for capacity upgrades. Nearly a decade after GenX first made headlines here, clean water progress is real — even if it's still a long road.
