IN THIS ISSUE: UNC System to Eliminate DEI Offices
Good morning Wilmington!
While we may be dealing with some rain today, it’s looking pretty clear for the rest of the week. We might actually get a chance to dry out. More good weather news: it looks like that potential tropical wave that we were looking at on Friday is not likely to make coastal landfall in the U.S.

UNC System to Eliminate DEI Offices Under New Guidance
[WECT] On August 8, the University of North Carolina Wilmington announced the closure of its Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion (OIDI). This decision follows changes by the UNC Board of Governors in May 2024, which also include eliminating the Chief Diversity Officer position and shifting cultural and identity centers to Student Affairs. Despite the office closure, the Upperman African American Cultural Center, Centro Hispano, Mohin-Scholz LGBTQIA Resource Center, and Asian Heritage Cultural Center will remain operational under Student Affairs. Chief Diversity Officer Dr. Donyell Roseboro will continue at UNCW in the Watson College of Education.

Red Cross Reports Ongoing Efforts as Tropical Storm Debby’s Impact Continues
[WECT] Tropical Storm Debby’s impact is still unfolding, according to James Jarvis, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of the Cape Fear. With ongoing flooding in the Cape Fear area, including rising waters in Lumberton and Bladen County, the Red Cross is actively managing shelters and warning of hazardous road conditions. As of now, eight shelters in North Carolina are aiding 56 people and four pets, with numbers expected to rise. Jarvis emphasizes the importance of staying informed and cautious as the situation evolves.
If you find yourself in need of shelter or services, there are several ways to get in contact with the Red Cross.
