IN THIS ISSUE: Nearly 750,000 Voters Removed from NC Rolls | UNC’s New Chancellor Welcomes Students
Good morning Wilmington!
I’m sure you have seen the terrifying scenes of Helene pounding Florida yesterday. Check in on your friends and loved ones living in the Florida–keeping in mind that they may be without power. Helene also brought flash flooding west of us in Asheville and surrounding areas. Most of the affects here will happen in the morning with likely rain: 1-3” with winds at 20+mph and 40+ mph gusts. Otherwise we should have a dry weekend.

Nearly 750,000 Voters Removed from NC Rolls Amid GOP Lawsuit
[The Hill] North Carolina has removed 747,000 voters from its rolls over the past 20 months, citing reasons like changes of address, inactivity in past federal elections, death, and felony convictions. The move follows a lawsuit from Republicans claiming the state failed to address ineligible voters. This voter purge comes as North Carolina remains a crucial swing state in the upcoming 2024 elections, with competitive races for both the presidency and governorship.

UNC’s New Chancellor Welcomes Students, Calls for Civic Engagement and Respect
[AOL] UNC-Chapel Hill’s new chancellor, Lee Roberts, welcomed 5,600 new students at the annual convocation. He encouraged them to embrace diverse experiences and ideas, advising them to connect with others, attend events, and take courses that expand their worldview. He emphasized the importance of free expression, civic engagement, and respect on campus while ensuring that no one’s freedom of expression disrupts teaching or safety. Roberts highlighted Carolina’s legacy of open dialogue and mutual respect as essential to shaping well-rounded, engaged citizens.

ILM Secures $20M in Federal Grants for Terminal, Roadway Enhancements
[WWAY] Wilmington International Airport (ILM) has been awarded $20 million in federal grants to fund capital improvements. Projects include the realignment of Airport Boulevard, a new terminal curb front, and terminal expansion design, adding new gates. These improvements, backed by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program, are part of ILM’s 5-year plan and expected to be completed by 2026.
