Lumbee Tribe Gains Full Federal Recognition After Decades-Long Fight
WRAL North Carolina’s Lumbee Tribe has officially gained full federal recognition after President Donald Trump signed a sweeping defense spending bill that included the Lumbee Fairness Act. The move ends a 137-year effort by the tribe to secure recognition, making Lumbee members eligible for federal services and benefits. The provision passed with strong bipartisan support from North Carolina lawmakers and backing from Gov. Josh Stein, who called the recognition long overdue and historically significant for both the tribe and the state.

We’ve experienced some heavy losses close to home. NASCAR legend Greg Biffle was known not only for his championship career, but for the way he showed up when it mattered most — using his own helicopter to deliver Starlink units and critical disaster supplies to people stranded in Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene. Wilmington also mourns the loss of Solange “Niki” Thompson of Indochine, whose restaurant became a cornerstone of our community. Our thoughts are with all the families and communities grieving this week. | ![]() |
