PCP Mon Sep 8: White House vs. Governor Stein

White House calls NC Gov. Stein “unfit to run a state” after his $11.5B request for Helene recovery

Good morning Wilmington!

Two lucky tickets — one in Texas and one in Missouri — matched all six numbers in Saturday night’s $1.8 billion Powerball drawing, the second-largest jackpot in Powerball history. Each winner can choose between a $893.5M annuity or a $410.3M lump sum. While Wilmington didn’t score the big win, there’s still time to grab tickets for Wednesday’s drawing for a measly $20 million.

Stein’s $11.5B Helene Relief Request Sparks Harsh White House Criticism

[ABC 15 News] North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein is under fire from the White House after requesting a supplemental $11.5 billion federal disaster package to aid recovery from Hurricane Helene. The White House called Stein “unfit to run a state,” prompting strong backlash from state leaders who argue federal support has been drastically low—only $1.6 billion received so far, or just 6% of the estimated needs. Stein and local officials insist that rebuilding the hard-hit western region will require funding cooperation across all levels of government.

Axes and Allies in Wilmington Gets New Owners

[Wilmington Biz] Wilmington axe-throwing business Axes and Allies has a new owner, local couple Bill and Lauren Symanski, who purchased it from founder Mia Troy. Opened in 2018, the venue features multiple throwing lanes, a bar, and a cabin-style lounge popular for parties, group outings, and corporate events. The Symanskis plan to build on the existing community while enhancing the experience. Troy expressed gratitude to patrons and employees and is confident in the new owners’ vision. Operations will continue at the current location.
