Federal Cuts Trigger Job Losses at PBS NC, More Than 25% of Staff Could Be Impacted

WUNC PBS North Carolina has begun laying off employees after losing $4.8 million in federal funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which made up 15% of its annual budget. Despite cost-cutting measures and voluntary buyouts, the station is moving forward with involuntary layoffs that could affect up to 25–27% of staff. The move follows Congress’s approval of President Trump’s rescission request to eliminate all federal funding for public media. Layoffs have been widespread across PBS and NPR affiliates nationwide, with more than 300 public media jobs lost since the vote.
