Historic Graystone Inn Declared Total Loss After Massive Downtown Wilmington Fire

WECT - A devastating fire tore through Wilmington’s historic Graystone Inn on Friday afternoon, with flames spreading from the first floor to the roof before crews could contain it. Fire Chief Steve Mason confirmed the building — already under repair after a 2023 fire — is now a total loss, calling it an emotional blow to the community and owners who had invested heavily in restoration. No one was inside at the time, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters continue monitoring hotspots as 3rd Street remains closed during the response. The cause has not yet been released, and updates are expected as the investigation continues.

Carolina Beach Launches Major 4–5 Week Nourishment Project

WECT - Carolina Beach has launched a multi-week shoreline nourishment project, with sand placement beginning Nov. 15 and continuing for 4–5 weeks depending on weather and equipment conditions. Heavy machinery and large pipes are already staged at Freeman Park and the North Pier area, where crews will begin pumping sand from the inlet before shifting to an offshore borrow site once the inlet supply is depleted. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says residents should expect truck traffic across Pleasure Island as work progresses south along the beach. Additional dredging along the Intracoastal Waterway is scheduled for winter. The nourishment cycle is set to repeat every three years.

South Carolina executed Stephen Bryant by firing squad, marking the state’s third execution by this method this year, with officials saying the 44-year-old chose the firing squad over lethal injection or the electric chair for the 2004 killings of three people. Witnesses observed the procedure, which followed Gov. Henry McMaster’s denial of clemency and comes amid South Carolina’s renewed use of executions after a long pause due to drug shortages. WECT
