Free Swim Safety Lessons Offered Locally as Part of Global Drowning Prevention Day
[WECT] The YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina is joining swim centers around the globe on Thursday, June 26 for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, a free event to promote water safety and prevent drowning — one of the top causes of accidental death in children. Wilmington residents can take part in the lesson at Robert Strange Pool, Legion Stadium Pool, or the YWCA on College Road. Registration is open until the day of the event, and families are encouraged to sign up to gain lifesaving skills and build water confidence.

Pet Owners Take Note: $60 Fee for Unaltered Pets in New Hanover County
[WECT] Starting July 1, pet owners in New Hanover County will see a steep increase in registration fees for pets that aren’t spayed or neutered. The annual fee for unaltered dogs, cats, and ferrets over one year old will rise from $20 to $60, while the fee for altered pets will remain at $10. All pets over four months old must be vaccinated for rabies and registered within 30 days of vaccination—or risk fines of $100 to $200. The new rule applies countywide, excluding Wrightsville Beach.
