Smartphones and Laptops Banned During Instruction as NC Tightens Classroom Rules

Carolina Journal North Carolina public schools are enforcing new limits on classroom screen time after a Jan. 1 deadline required districts to ban smartphones and restrict laptop use during instructional hours. The law allows exceptions for teacher-directed activities, emergencies, and students with IEPs or health plans, while also mandating education on social media addiction, misinformation, and trafficking. State leaders say the move will reduce distractions and improve learning, placing North Carolina among dozens of states rethinking digital device use in schools.
