IN THIS ISSUE: UNC Researchers Help Develop Breakthrough Allergy Medication | NC Bill Proposes Year-Round Standard Time

WEDNESDAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU

Good morning Wilmington!

In a time when communities often feel at the mercy of developers, a group of neighbors in Ocean Isle Beach took matters into their own hands. Faced with the potential loss of a beloved local clubhouse, 13 residents pooled their resources and purchased the property themselves—protecting a community gathering space and giving it a fresh start. Now, with renovations underway and a new restaurant in the works, they’re proving that investing in where you live isn’t just about real estate—it’s about preserving the places that bring people together.

UNC Researchers Help Develop Breakthrough Allergy Medication

[NC Health News] A new FDA-approved treatment, omalizumab, offers hope for people with severe food allergies. Developed with contributions from UNC Chapel Hill researchers, the medication—previously used for asthma—helps reduce or prevent life-threatening allergic reactions. Kristen Bush, whose son Braylon has multiple food allergies, says the treatment has given them peace of mind and more food freedom. While omalizumab isn’t a cure, it provides protection for those at high risk. Experts call it a "game changer" for the growing number of children with food allergies, though some may find the required injections a drawback.

No More Clock Changes? NC Bill Proposes Year-Round Standard Time

[Spectrum 1] North Carolina is considering ending daylight saving time and sticking with standard time year-round. If approved, the change would take effect on March 8, 2026. The debate over daylight saving time has resurfaced due to concerns about its impact on health and safety. Originally adopted to save energy during wartime, the practice has since been questioned due to unintended consequences like increased car crashes and disrupted sleep patterns. The bill's supporters are optimistic that momentum is growing for change.
