PCP: TUE JAN 30: Our Reverse Osmosis decision

IN THIS ISSUE: Guardian Investigates PFAS in NC

TUESDAY TOGETHER WITH

Good Morning Wilmington!

When I started this newsletter I knew that one hot subject would be drinking water. In this regard, we are all in the same boat. My family and I recently made the switch from buying bottled water to investing in a reverse osmosis system. I am so glad we did as this ended up saving us a lot of money in the long run. I did the research and decided on APEC filtration. All of that information about our RO journey is below. Know that these are affiliate links IF you decide to purchase an APEC water system, you will be helping me out but using the links below.

First it was Pie Day (Jan 23) and now, today it’s National Croissant Day! Be sure to place an order with Burger King online and get a breakfast croissant for just one cent! Makes sense, Good. Now on to it!

Guardian Investigation Reveals High PFAS Levels Near Chemours' North Carolina Plant

[The Guardian] Residents near Chemours' PFAS manufacturing plant in North Carolina face health risks and uncertainty as toxic chemicals contaminate air, water, and soil. Despite state-mandated pollution control measures, residents fear exposure to harmful PFAS compounds, prompting concerns about their safety and well-being.

After significant research we went with APEC Reverse Osmosis System

We living in the Port City all have a certain things in common:

  • We enjoy live music and good food.

  • We love living in this special gem of a town.

  • We love the feeling of arriving home to our charming little (but expanding) airport, ILM

  • We are all very concerned about our drinking water

When the GenX information and the movie, Dark Waters came out, we started buying our water from Crystal Springs. We had it delivered a few times a month and this turned out to be a great solution for the short term. Needless to say, water delivery gets very expensive over time. About a year ago I started doing some research on reverse osmosis water purifiers–much of which was derived from this Duke study on reverse osmosis [RO] systems. After hours of research we decided to go with the APEC ROES-100 water filter system.

We went with APEC because:

  • It preformed well in the Duke Study

  • It’s made in the US (California)

  • The replacement filters are a also made in the US/CA and are readily available and easy to order

  • The APEC system had fantastic reviews

The APEC ROES-100 is priced at $249. I believe this is said to yield 100 gallons/day which is overkill. They also offer the APEC ROES-50 which yields 50 gallons/day for just $199. It’s my understanding that the difference between the two is the connections and tubing that comes with it. The ROES-100 comes with tubing that’s 3/8 in diameter and the ROES-50 comes with tubing that’s ¼” in diameter. Because of this, the flow rate on the APEC ROES-100 is much faster/better. We had a friend help us with the installation but I can say now that it’s done I could have done this myself. The installation took us just 2 hours before we were up-and-running with reverse osmosis water!

Some important things to know about this product:

  • You will need a significant amount of space ideally under your sink for the filter system and accumulation tank

  • You will likely need to drill a hole through your counter and/or your sink

  • The above are affiliate links – I appreciate you using them if decide to go with APEC

  • It takes three gallons of tap water to make one gallon of purified reverse osmosis water

  • If you want to hook the RO system to your refrigerator, you will need an additional kit that tees off the sink system. Make sure you’re getting the proper kit for the 3/8” ROES-100 system or the 1/4” ROES-50 system
