Southeastern NC Receives $10 Million Boost from Novant Health to Address Healthcare Talent Shortage
[WECT] Novant Health has pledged $10 million to address the shortage of healthcare workers in southeastern North Carolina. This commitment includes $5 million in scholarships over the next five years for students in healthcare programs at Cape Fear Community College. The initiative aims to support the recruitment, training, and retention of healthcare talent in the region, addressing concerns about a potential shortage of registered nurses in the state. Novant's investment is expected to empower residents, advance careers, and ensure a sustainable healthcare workforce for the community.
Important to note: Novant recently eliminated 160 job positions.

Disney planning to build “Asteria” neighborhood in Chatham County, NC
Disney's Storyliving is set to build its second residential community, Asteria, in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Collaborating with Walt Disney Imagineering and DMB Development, the community will be part of the larger Chatham Park on 1,500 acres in Chatham County. The project, in the early planning stages, aims to offer over 4,000 residential units, including homes for 55+ adults, combining metropolitan amenities with small-town charm. The development reflects Disney's commitment to innovative growth and planning and follows the Cotino community in California as the second Storyliving project in the United States. Sales are anticipated to start by 2027.
NCDOT Engineer says bridge needs urgent repairs
[WECT] New Hanover County commissioners express frustration over lack of NCDOT representation in meeting discussing upcoming Cape Fear Memorial Bridge repair work. The eastbound lanes will close for about three months, followed by the westbound lanes, causing significant traffic between New Hanover and Brunswick Counties. Commissioners criticize NCDOT's communication and question the six-month project duration, citing concerns over the impact on drivers and emergency response times. NCDOT Engineer Chad Kimes defends the project's necessity, citing the replacement of stringers, and emphasizes the immediate need for repairs to prevent further issues.
