PCP DEC 28: Brookgreen Gardens did not disappoint!

IN THIS ISSUE: Recycle that tree | FBI warns of Sextortion

THURSDAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU

Good Morning Wilmington!

My family and I went to Brookgreen Gardens “Night of 1000 Candles” with my parents last night and it did not disappoint! We reserved our tickets back in August and while that seems extreme, it might be necessary. We spoke to a Myrtle Beach local who has never made it there but tried to get tickets in October only to find they were sold out. In spite of all the heavy rain in Wilmington yesterday morning, the weather at Brookgreen was great. It’s a bit of a drive but definitely worth it!

Here’s some interesting stats:

  • 4,500 candles are lit each night (volunteers re-light candles if they blow out)

  • 2 million additional lights throughout the gardens

  • 130,000 lights on the Christmas tree

  • 5,500 nightly visitors, with about 52,000+ attendees total

  •  3 months to set up and 2 months to break down

  • 150 staff and volunteers.

Christmas tree recycling

New Hanover County, North Carolina, residents without residential trash and yard waste pickup from the City of Wilmington can participate in the annual Christmas tree recycling program. The collected trees are recycled into mulch and compost for use in county parks and gardens.

You will be able to drop off trees at:

  • The Home Depot, 5511 Carolina Beach Road

  • The Home Depot, 210 Eastwood Road

  • New Hanover County Landfill, 5210 US Highway 421 North

The Town of Surf City is separately collecting live Christmas trees to help build up sand dunes. Those trees can be dropped off at 214 N New River Drive.

You can also recycle your Christmas trees for a good cause: SkyWatch bird rescue in Castle Hayne will use your tree to offer enrichment for a variety of their resident animals. Birds – big and small – enjoy roosting and foraging in a real tree, tortoises use them as scratching posts, and even pigs enjoy pulling trees into their pens to play with them. If your tree is still green with no brown or shedding, you can drop it off anytime at the rescue at 3600 Lynn Ave. Trees can be left by the rescue’s driveway gate or along the parking lot fence.

FBI issues warning of “sextortion” - specifically targeting teen boys

[WECT] The FBI Charlotte field office issues a warning about the rise in sextortion attempts, particularly financial sextortion targeting teenage boys. Cases have surged, with a 20% increase in reports between 2022 and 2023. Sextortion involves adults posing as teens, manipulating victims into producing explicit images, and then extorting them for more photos or money. Financial sextortion focuses on convincing younger males to engage in explicit activities over video, secretly recording them, and threatening to post the content online unless money is paid. The FBI urges parents to be vigilant and provides tips to protect children online.
