TUESDAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU

Good Morning Wilmington!

My son got his learners permit today and i’m so proud of him–but I’m also a little scared. This is a challenging place to learn how to drive. I can’t help be nervous for him but also for all of the young new drivers trying to make left turns on Market & College, shimming around a runner or biker and taking their changes in the appropriately named “Suicide lane.” Please have patience with the drivers that may be trying your patience, he or she may be a new driver learning their way….that and watch for bikers, runners and pedestrians.

Homeless Encampment Near MLK & N. Kerr Getting Cleared Out.

[WECT] Starting on October 18, "No Trespassing" signs will be placed at a homeless encampment located near Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and N. Kerr Avenue in Wilmington, North Carolina. The Wilmington Police Department is working to relocate approximately 100 homeless individuals who have been residing there for months, many of whom moved to the encampment after a county ordinance prohibited overnight stays on county property, particularly around the downtown library area. Katrina Knight, the executive director of the Good Shepherd Center, believes that this change may prompt some of the affected individuals to seek assistance, but others may disperse to different parts of the city or county. The larger issue is the lack of affordable housing in the area, which often leads people to the brink of homelessness due to high housing costs, making them vulnerable to eviction. Additionally, the cleanup of the encampment is expected to be costly, with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) having spent $6,000 on a cleanup project a few months prior, and the trash accumulating to 26,000 pounds, likely increasing as official cleanup efforts begin.
