New Hanover County and Wilmington City leaders share goals for 2024

Local leaders in Wilmington are setting priorities for 2024, with a focus on addressing various challenges.

The City of Wilmington has identified three primary goals: addressing the issues related to the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, tackling homelessness, and addressing affordable housing.

Mayor Bill Saffo emphasizes the connection between homelessness and affordable housing and expects affordable housing developments to increase in 2024, despite concerns about rapid growth. The City sees growth as positive, with efforts to bring more affordability into the marketplace. New Hanover County Commissioner

Jonathan Barfield emphasizes improving the quality of life by introducing attractions like Project Grace, the Michael Jordan museum, and a new park. He also highlights the importance of prioritizing mental health services, public safety, and amenities for first responders. Barfield aims to use funds from the opioid settlement and the hospital's sale to establish a long-term mental health facility with associated housing.

The overarching goals aim to enhance the well-being of the residents of New Hanover County and Wilmington, addressing homelessness, mental health services, and overall community development.
