Mosley students plea with NCHS Board Members to keep Mosley open

Controversial Plans: Shut Mosley down and reopen as a “Newcomers School”

[WWAY] New Hanover County contemplates converting the Career Readiness Academy at Mosley High School into a "newcomers school" for refugee, asylum-seeking, and immigrant children. Commissioner Dane Scalise opposes, likening it to a "migrant resettlement or assimilation facility." The proposal, revealed in a late 2023 meeting, includes a "newcomer center" for parents. Concerns arise over losing the current educational system. Parents, students, and staff protest the closure of Mosley, emphasizing its unique support. Superintendent Dr. Charles Foust's 2021 plan to close Mosley sparks community resistance.

You may remember a Board of Education meeting on December 5th when students from Mosley made a heartfelt plea to keep Mosley open. Most of the BoE members were not even aware that it was set to close. It appears that this Newcomers School may be the reason for the to consider closing Mosley.

North Carolina State Lottery Commission to allow mobile sports wagering beginning March 11

[WECT] The North Carolina State Lottery Commission green lights mobile sports wagering from March 11, allowing licensed operators to register players and accept deposits from March 1. The move, initially scheduled for January, aligns with Governor Cooper's aim to kick off sports betting by March Madness. UNCW anticipates a substantial annual boost of around $300,000 from sports wagering funds. The decision precedes the June 15 deadline set by state law, signaling an accelerated launch of legalized gambling in North Carolina.
