New Hanover School Board Votes Unanimously to Make Chris Barnes Permanent Superintendent

[WECT] Chris Barnes is set to become the permanent superintendent of New Hanover County Schools after a unanimous vote by the Board of Education to enter contract negotiations. Barnes, who has served as interim superintendent since August, has been praised for his leadership and commitment to fostering a positive culture. Board members expressed confidence in his ability to guide the district forward. Barnes, honored by the decision, emphasized his dedication to providing students with a high-quality education. Jefferson Griffin Challenges 60,000+ Ballots in Tight NC Supreme Court Race

[WECT] A federal appeals panel is reviewing the unresolved North Carolina Supreme Court race between Republican Jefferson Griffin and Democrat Allison Riggs. Griffin is contesting over 60,000 ballots, including many from Cape Fear voters, citing registration concerns. Some voters, like Karen Ipock Hodgin, were shocked to find their ballots challenged. With Riggs leading by just 734 votes, the case remains contentious. Critics accuse Griffin of undermining democracy, while the state Supreme Court—where Republicans hold a 5-2 majority—has yet to rule. Riggs has recused herself from the decision.
