WEDNESDAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU

Good morning Wilmington!

I recently purchased ½ a bushel of oysters from the family selling them on the side of Gordon Road - across from Lewis Farms. He charged me $35 for ½ bushel. They were fresh and tasty!

Cut Costs & Conserve: Rain Barrels Now Free for Eligible Residents

[WWAY] The New Hanover County Soil and Water Conservation District (NHSWCD) is expanding its rain barrel program to promote water conservation and reduce stormwater runoff. While discounted barrels have been available for nearly 20 years, eligible residents can now apply for free barrels. Rain barrels help prevent flooding, reduce water pollution, and lower water bills by collecting rainwater for outdoor use. To qualify, residents must complete an online application and have gutters or downspouts suitable for installation. For more details or to apply, visit the NHSWCD website and join the effort to protect the environment.

New Executive Orders Address Housing, Roads After Hurricane Helene

[WRAL] North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein announced five executive orders to accelerate recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene caused $59.6 billion in damages and displaced over 12,000 residents. Focused on housing and infrastructure repairs, Stein’s orders enable the purchase of 1,000 temporary housing units and expedited repairs to private roads and bridges. A new Governor’s Recovery Office for Western North Carolina will oversee rebuilding efforts, while another division will focus on revitalizing damaged communities. Stein also granted state employees paid leave to volunteer in recovery efforts. While praised as bipartisan solutions, state auditors vowed to monitor spending closely. Stein emphasized urgency and resilience, pledging long-term support for the hardest-hit areas.

Can’t finish your oysters? Here’s a great recipe for oyster soup. I steam them just enough to make it easy to open – then, I would follow the recipe but I add at least 2x the amount of oysters. The soup freezes well too!
