New Hanover Co. Board Defends Ballot Handling Amid Scrutiny
[MSN] New Hanover County Board of Elections is facing scrutiny over absentee ballots unprocessed by Oct. 31, leaving hundreds uncounted on election night. The board cited state guidance, though it’s under question. Despite this, they intend to approve 1,474 absentee ballots, with hundreds pending final decisions. Provisional ballots also await assessment. County officials, candidates, and party leaders have stressed transparency and accountability. A canvass on Friday will certify results, potentially triggering recounts.

Brunswick County Schools to Pilot Advanced Weapons Detection System
[WECT] Brunswick County Schools will pilot the OPENGATE weapons detection system in the coming months to enhance student safety. This walk-through system, consisting of two mobile pillars, is designed to be less intrusive, allowing students to pass through without removing backpacks. Superintendent Dale Cole emphasized that the mobility of the units enables randomized placement for added security. The program, funded by state safety grants and local budget allocations, will initially be implemented at the county’s three largest high schools. Though the $40,000 cost per unit is significant, Cole affirmed that safeguarding students’ lives is invaluable.
