CFCC’s Jim Morton Sees Big Salary Hike, But Faculty Raises Lag Behind
[WECT] Cape Fear Community College President Jim Morton’s salary has increased by 47% over the last four years, now exceeding $400,000 and surpassing the U.S. President’s salary. Morton's compensation hikes contrast with the 13% increase faculty and staff received over the same period, causing discontent. Morton’s raises were largely supported by CFCC trustees, though some members voiced concern, questioning equity as other college employees face limited raises. Morton’s tenure has also been marked by reports of a challenging workplace environment, an accreditation warning, and moderate student outcomes, sparking broader debate on college priorities.
Wilmington’s Topsail Steamer Cooks Up Success on Shark Tank
[Wilmington Biz] Danielle Mahon, founder of Topsail Steamer, a seafood boil business, recently appeared on “Shark Tank.” Seeking $350,000 for an 8% stake, she agreed to a deal with Todd Graves and Lori Greiner for 18% equity. Mahon plans to use the investment to expand Topsail Steamer, which operates seven company-owned and one franchised location. Graves advised against franchising, recommending a focus on well-compensated managers instead. Since the episode aired, Topsail Steamer has seen significant website traffic and increased online orders.
