Hampstead Family Pushes for New Dog Laws After Child’s Severe Injury in Attack

[WECT] A Hampstead family is calling for stricter dog laws after a neighbor’s dog attacked their 7-year-old grandson, leaving him with severe injuries and over 100 stitches. Despite the attack, North Carolina law didn’t classify the dog as “dangerous” since it was its first offense. The family has started a petition to push for legislative changes, expressing fear and frustration as the dog remains nearby.

Wilmington Shelter Seeks Volunteers as Demand Surges

[WECT] Wilmington’s warming shelter will open Tuesday as temperatures drop, but new rules limit openings to when it’s below 30°F for three straight nights. Rising demand—50% more guests than last year—has stretched resources, prompting a call for more volunteers. The shelter also plans to hire staff, apply for grants, and explore summer cooling shelters in 2025.
