IN THIS ISSUE: Coast Guard Report to Help Decide Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Replacement | Duke Expands Gas-Fired Plants in NC
Good morning Wilmington!
I got invited to a attend a technology Wilmington Input Output meetup group last night at CoWorx in the cargo district. It was great meeting a wide range of developers and designers and hearing them talk about the projects they’re working on. Are you interested in technology? The next Input Output Meetup takes place on February 5th @7:00PM and features a panel of senior tech professionals.

Coast Guard Report to Help Decide Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Replacement as Residents Voice Concerns
[WWAY] The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement project is progressing, with three designs under consideration—a moveable-span bridge and two fixed-span options at 100 and 135 feet tall. The final choice depends on a Coast Guard report due in March. Public concerns include tolls, pedestrian access, and the potential demolition of historic homes, like Elizabeth O’Donnell’s 19th-century residence. A decision is expected by September 2025, and construction could take five years once started.

Energy Debate Heats Up as Duke Expands Gas-Fired Plants in NC
[News&Observer] Duke Energy will replace coal-fired power units with gas-fired plants at two North Carolina sites, citing the need for reliability and affordability during the transition to cleaner energy. The Roxboro plant will see an 83% rise in greenhouse gas emissions, and the Marshall plant’s emissions will more than double. Environmental groups criticized the move, highlighting concerns about methane emissions and increased pollutants like volatile organic compounds. While Duke says the shift reduces coal-related toxins, critics argue the plan slows progress toward renewables and lacks strict timelines for retiring coal units. State regulators approved the projects, prioritizing grid stability but sparking debate over balancing energy needs with environmental goals.
