Homelessness in Western NC Rises 20% After Hurricane Helene Devastates Homes and Communities
[NC Health News] The remnants of Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina in September, destroying homes and displacing families like Bonnie Goggins Jones, who now lives in a donated camper with her grandchildren. Many newly homeless residents were not at risk before the storm, revealing a shifting face of homelessness. Hospitality House and other organizations report a 20% rise in homelessness across affected counties, exacerbated by the expiration of federal pandemic aid. With local shelters overwhelmed, recovery efforts are urgent but face growing challenges.
