Dr. Barnes Named Permanent NHCS Superintendent

[WECT] The New Hanover County Board of Education unanimously approved a contract to make Dr. Chris Barnes the permanent superintendent of New Hanover County Schools. With nearly 30 years of experience as a teacher, principal, and human resources leader, Barnes was initially appointed as interim superintendent after Dr. Charles Foust was fired. Board Chair Melissa Mason praised his integrity, vision, and proven ability to stabilize and progress the district, emphasizing a shared commitment to putting students first. Dr. Barnes expressed his honor in continuing to serve the community, ensuring that educators, students, and families receive the support they need.

NCDOT Launches Project HB-0040 to Replace Three Aging Bridges in Wrightsville Beach, Expected to Begin in Spring 2028

[Town of WB] The North Carolina Department of Transportation is set to replace three aging bridges in Wrightsville Beach under project HB-0040. The plan includes constructing a new 4-lane divided bridge on US 76 (Causeway Drive) and two new 2-lane bridges on US 74 (West Salisbury Street) to cross Lees Cut and Banks Channel. These new structures will incorporate 10–12-foot multi-use paths and 6-foot bike lanes to address growing pedestrian and cyclist needs, without adding extra vehicle lanes. Currently in the design stage with right-of-way acquisition underway, the project is expected to commence in Spring 2028. The Town is actively engaged through its Bridge Replacement Committee and invites community feedback.
