IN THIS ISSUE: UNCW Alumni Launch Roshi, a Peer-to-Peer Tutoring & Coaching App | NC Senate Bill Aims to Control Healthcare Costs—But Could Cut Coverage
TUESDAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU

Good morning Wilmington!
Remember the FTX collapse and the downfall of Sam Bankman-Fried? At its peak in mid-2021, FTX was the third-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, with over a million users. But in November 2022, it all came crashing down when the exchange froze withdrawals, triggering a liquidity crisis that left customers unable to access their funds. The company’s sudden implosion wiped out billions in customer assets, leading to what some have called crypto’s version of a bank run.
Now, more than two years later, FTX is preparing to return approximately $12.7 billion to its former customers and creditors, with over 90% of approved claims expected to be repaid. The payouts, set to begin around February 18, likely that many will receive their repayments in stable coins through Kraken and BitGo. Will investors reinvest in crypto, or will they take their money and run? February could be an interesting month for the markets.

UNCW Alumni Launch Roshi, a Peer-to-Peer Tutoring & Coaching App
[WWAY] A new app, Roshi, founded by two UNCW alumni, has launched in Wilmington to connect university students with local families seeking tutoring and coaching. The peer-to-peer platform offers instruction in academics, sports, music, and languages, providing students with flexible work opportunities while making mentorship more accessible. UNCW basketball player Mary Ferrito has been named the app’s first student ambassador, helping to bridge the gap between students and the community.

NC Senate Bill Aims to Control Healthcare Costs—But Could Cut Coverage
[WFAE] The NC Senate is considering a bill that would require lawmakers to repeal an existing health insurance mandate for every new one they add, aiming to curb rising healthcare costs. Supporters say mandates drive up premiums, while critics worry it could limit coverage for essential services. The bill has bipartisan concerns but is moving forward, with support from the N.C. Chamber and the State Employees Association. If passed, it could reshape how healthcare coverage is regulated in the state.
