Good Morning Wilmington!

The same Nor'easter that brought winds and rains to Wilmington caused flash flooding in Charleston, SC, severe flooding in Carolina Beach–leaving 5,000 without power throughout southeastern NC. I hope everyone made it safe through the storms.

Here’s to the friends, families, neighbors and employers that host holiday parties this time of the year. Thank you for welcoming us into your home, paying for the venues, purchasing and preparing food so that we can all enjoy in the fellowship while making memories and forming traditions.

What's Changing for Teen Drivers in NC? NC Extends Teen Learner Permit Period

[WECT] Starting January 1, changes to teen learner permits and licenses will be in effect in North Carolina. Teen drivers will now be required to hold their Level 1 Learner Permit for nine months before obtaining their Level 2 Limited Provisional License. This marks an extension from the current six-month waiting period, which was temporarily shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To qualify for a Level 2 license, drivers under 18 must be at least 16 years old, complete 60 hours of driving, pass a road test, and provide printed proof of insurance in their name. The new regulations aim to enhance road safety for young drivers.

Second Trump administration will “come after” the media–says ally

[WRAL-AP] Donald Trump ally Kash Patel, a former Justice Department official, asserted that if Trump were to be re-elected, his administration would retaliate against individuals in the media, either "criminally or civilly," regarding their coverage of the 2020 election. Patel, also a former chief of staff in the Defense Department, expressed intentions to target both government and media figures deemed conspirators in Trump's unfounded claims of election fraud.

In-State Undergraduates Spared, Out-of-State and Grad Students Face 6% Tuition Increase

[WWAY] The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) Board of Trustees has approved a 6% increase in tuition for out-of-state undergraduates and both in-state and out-of-state graduate students. In-state undergraduate students will not face a tuition increase. The hike, aimed at generating additional support for university priorities outlined in UNCW's new strategic plan, will take effect if approved by the UNC Board of Governors for the fiscal year 2024-25. The board also greenlit increases in fees, room, and board, aligning with guidance from the Board of Governors. The move seeks to balance financial needs without overly burdening students and families.
