Election power struggle will likely end with a veto by Roy Cooper
[WWAY] The North Carolina General Assembly has passed a Republican-backed bill that would shift control of the State Board of Elections away from the governor and give it to lawmakers as the 2024 elections approach. The bill is now awaiting approval from Democratic Governor Roy Cooper, who has promised to veto it. Republicans argue that the new structure will build more consensus on election matters and boost voter confidence, but opponents, including Cooper, claim it's a power play that could lead to stalemates and hinder access to early in-person voting. The changes would take effect on January 1, 2024, and could impact the upcoming primary elections in March. Despite potential vetoes, Republican lawmakers hold narrow veto-proof majorities in both chambers, making an override likely.
